We’re sad to announce that as of Wednesday Sept 18th, 2019, The Rookery is indefinitely closed. We’ve reluctantly come to this difficult decision after countless hours agonizing over the pros and cons of keeping the business open. Among our many challenges, a shrinking neighborhood market lost to competition from other “hotter” areas, the relentlessly increasing cost of doing business, including taxes, wages, utilities etc., and the constant need for being entertained by the “new” in a city that seems to open bars/restaurants on a daily basis. But it was ultimately the diminishing returns from the ever-increasing time and energy the business demanded of us that caused us to re-evaluate moving forward.
We’re proud to say that our roots in Ukrainian Village go back almost 20 years. From opening the former Darkroom in 2001, The Rookery’s predecessor The Old Oak Tap in 2008, and what we considered the natural evolution into The Rookery three and a half years ago. We’re going to take some time to decide our next steps. Maybe we’ll recharge our batteries and look for some help to begin in a new direction or maybe it really is just time to say goodbye.
We would like to thank everyone who has supported us. From our friends and family, the staff who stuck with us as we weathered our many ups and downs, to those who helped create some fantastic pop-ups that we were privileged enough to have been able to put on. We couldn’t have done it without you. But ultimately, It’s been an honor to meet some truly great people who’ve walked thru our doors over the years, particularly the many we now consider friends.
